Undergrounding of Utilities Starts Wednesday

The outside lane of eastbound Shawnee Mission Parkway at I-35 will be closed starting Wednesday, Dec. 4, for about three-months.

Construction crews are undergrounding overhead utilities by Merriam Grand Station from I-35 to just east of Antioch Road in the first phase.

Future phases include undergrounding utilities on:

  • Antioch Road south of Shawnee Mission Parkway to 64th Terrace
  • Westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway west of Antioch Road to Slater St.
  • Slater St. north of Shawnee Mission Parkway to just south of 62nd Terrace.

There will be additional lane closures in this area as work is completed. Drivers can still access East Frontage Road during construction.

The City Council approved the $5 million project to help beautify the area. Construction for the entire project is expected to be completed by mid-July.
