Merriam Community Center staff is partnering with Project SEARCH AdventHealth Shawnee Mission to help students with disabilities transition from school to work.

Through this program, Shawnee Mission School District students develop life and work skills to help get employment in an inclusive setting while empowering young adults through hands-on training and real-world experiences.

Two years ago, Project SEARCH formed a Business Advisory Council with local business leaders to expand workplace opportunities outside the hospital setting. It now offers internships with Johnson County Parks and Recreation and the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation.

Merriam Parks and Recreation Director Anna Slocum serves on the Business Advisory Council. She recently had the students from Project SEARCH visit the MCC to learn about the work environment there.

The students took a tour of the MCC and met with staff to discuss the application, interviewing, and onboarding process they might experience when they graduate from Project SEARCH.

“It’s amazing being part of this program that provides real-life experiences and helps prepare them for entering the workforce,” said Merriam Parks and Recreation Director Anna Slocum. “It’s a great partnership since Parks and Recreation is a great first job for students entering the workforce.”

Over the last three years, Project SEARCH graduates have had an 86% employment rate.
