Merriam police officers will focus on kid safety Oct. 6-12 and ticket anyone not properly buckled.

Officers will patrol local elementary schools during the weeklong seatbelt enforcement campaign.

They’ll look for seatbelt violators during school drop-off and pickup times to promote the importance of seatbelt use.

Fines for not buckling up:

  • Ages 0-13: $60 plus court costs
  • Ages 14-17: $60
  • Ages 18 and older: $30

The Merriam Police Department is partnering with the Kansas Department of Transportation and other law enforcement agencies across the state.

According to a 2022 KDOT study, 97% of children are buckled when their driver wears a seatbelt. Only 30% of children wear a seatbelt when the driver isn’t buckled.
