Merriam, a city of Second Class, has four wards. Elections are held in odd numbered years. Merriam is served by a Mayor and 8 Council Members, two from each ward. All are elected to 4 year terms.
The Mayor and four Council Members will be elected in 2009. The remaining four council seats will be filled in 2011 election.
Terms of office begin with and include the first regular meeting of the governing body following certification of the election.
