6-Year-Old Wins Merriam Park Passport Program

Park Passport Winner

Ask any 6-year-old what he or she likes to do in the summer, and it’s probably going to their neighborhood park. Luckily, Merriam has a few gems and spotlighted one with its Park Passport Program.

Our City joined Fairway, Leawood, Mission, Prairie Village, and Roeland Park in celebrating National Parks and Recreation Month with the program. From July 1 until Aug. 6, community members were challenged to visit one designated park in each city and answer a few questions to complete their passport. Completed entries were eligible for prizes.

Six-year-old Joshua Hernandez won Merriam’s challenge. Anna Slocum, Merriam Parks and Recreation director, presented Joshua with a “Superpass” – allowing him next summer to visit pools at all six participating cities.

The second grader said he was excited to win the passport challenge. Joshua’s favorite park is Campbell Park in Merriam.

“I like going down the slides and climbing on the rocks,” Joshua said.

Joshua’s 5-year-old sister, Lydia, said she helped him win because she went to all the parks with her brother. The siblings visited the six parks over the span of three weeks with their mom, Leah, and grandma, Betty Peterson. Leah said the Park Passport Program was a great summer activity the whole family could enjoy.

“The kids had fun finding the answers to the questions,” Leah said. “Although it was fun in itself just going to all of the parks, the fact that he won was a bonus.”

Leah said her family looks forward to visiting all six pools next summer.

Prairie Village resident Emeline Wilinski won the grand prize of a 2018 pool membership and “Superpass” to all six city pools.
