The Overland Park Fire Marshal has issued a burn ban effective immediately for the cities of Overland Park and Merriam, Kansas. The Fire Marshal is suspending all issued burn permits until further notice. Recreational fires (fire pits, chiminea, etc.) are also prohibited.
Outdoor grilling is permitted, but grillers are urged to use extreme caution and be sure to remain present while grilling. Please be sure that a means of fire suppression is available to completely extinguish coals after grilling.
Anyone caught violating the terms of the burn ban can be fined up to $500 and ordered to appear in court.
We are also appealing especially to smokers to safely discard smoking materials. Cigarettes should be completely extinguished in sand or water, before discarding. Please do not flick cigarette butts onto the ground or from car windows as they may ignite grass, weeds or mulch.
The Fire Marshal is taking this action because of the warm, extremely dry and sometimes windy conditions we’re currently experiencing. The ban will remain in effect until conditions improve.
Please contact the Overland Park Fire Department Prevention Division at 913-888-6066 with any questions.
