Merriam Stormwater Program

The City of Merriam has partnered with the Johnson County Stormwater Management Program to provide $5,000 for an innovative, community-based approach to improving stormwater quality. The Merriam Stormwater Program will support and educating residents in efforts to implement best practices that reduce stormwater runoff.

The goal of this cost-share program is to encourage property owners to incorporate Stormwater Treatment Facilities (STFs) on their property. These STFs include rain barrels, rain gardens, native tree plants and other native plantings. The program will help offset the cost of materials and/or contractor labor associated with the installation of such facilities.

The City of Merriam will provide assistance with the following Stormwater Treatment Facilities (STFs):
  • Rain Garden 50% match up to $1,000
  • Rain Barrel 50% match up to $75
  • Native Tree Plantings 50% match up to $150
  • Native Plantings 50% match up to $1,000

To apply, property owners must meet these conditions:

  1. The property owner is responsible for all project costs. The City of Merriam will reimburse property owners after submitting final costs and receipts.
  2. The project must be completed by October 31, 2017.
  3. The City of Merriam will require access to your property for evaluation of the application prior to the start of construction; after construction is completed; and during the 3-year maintenance period.
  4. Implementation of approved project(s) is the sole responsibility of the property owner. The City of Merriam is not liable for personal injury or property damage resulting from work on STFs.
  5. Projects approved for funding carry no implied warranty by the City of Merriam.
  6. Funded STFs shall be maintained for a minimum period of three years. All maintenance costs are the responsibility of the property owner.
  7. The property owner is responsible for obtaining all applicable permits. This includes notifying Kansas One Call at 8-1-1 before digging. This application does not constitute a permit.
  8. STFs are subject to applicable laws and provisions including, but not limited to, Merriam Municipal Codes.
